Arts and Crafts

This group is for members who enjoy many different aspects of crafting.  The Arts and Crafts goup does not meet every month, but only a few times per year when we have an appropriate project on which to work.  Suggestions from members for projects to make are most welcome.  Meeting time and place will vary with each project.

Astro Lunch

This group meets monthly on the second Tuesday for lunch at an area restaurant to celebrate the individual astrfological signs of the zodiac.  Names and members for each sign are found in the monthly newsletter from the birthday list.  The restaurant is called two weeks ahead of time in order to make reservations.

Beading

This group is for members who enjoy all aspects of beading.  Members have various levels of expertise from beginner to professional, and share their skills in a relaxed and informal way.  There will be instructions offered each month on a specific project, but some of the group will be working on their own projects.  We will meet at a member's home on one Tuesday of each month.

Books After Dark

This activity is for those who love to read.  Books After Dark meets at 7 PM on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Starbuck's inside Randall's grocery store at 14610 Memorial Drive at the corner of Dairy Ashford.  We have four or five meetings a year.  Books are selected from among member recommendations.  The person who recommends the book does some research and then leads our discussion.

Bowling

This group meets every Tuesday at 1 PM at AMF Bunker Hill.  Members pay for their own games.  We try to move smoothly and rapidly to deliver the ball down the wooden alley for a total three games.  Our group plays informally and is not in a league, but we get league prices.

Bunco

This is a fun, fast game that requires no skill other than a toss of the dice and the desire to have fun.  We will meet at a member's home the fourth Friday of each month, and will play for approximately two hours or until lunch time.  Lunch details are decided by each hostess.  We are limited to the first twelve players, so sign up early.

CCC - Casseroles, Conversations and Cocktails

Casseroles, Conversations and Cocktails is a fun, casual potluck evening at a member's home.  Each couple or single will be assigned to bring one of the following:  appetizer, salad, casserole or dessert.  We will meet at 7 PM on the first Saturday of the month.  Everyone brings their own beverage of chice (BYOB).

Cooking with a Twist

This group typically meets on the first Tuesday of the month, unless the hostess deems otherwise.  This activity will be all about fun and easy cooking, showing both the multicultural diversity of our organizations and the creative cooks among us.  The themes will range from "Creative Chicken in Half an Hour," "A Dash of Italian," "A Tango in Spain" to "Luncheon with Julia."  The members will learn how to cook and enjoy different cuisines, and find out where to get the ingredients in Houston.  The costs will be shared among the participants.  Don't miss out, come and find out!

Daytime Book Group

This group meets on the second Friday of the month from 10 AM until noon at a member's home.  The discussion is informal, and is led by a member who has previously volunteered to lead.  Since members come from different backgrounds and many have lived abroad, their varied experiences contribute to the discussions.  Books are recommended and selected by the members, and everyone is encouraged to take a turn as leader.  The December meeting is held in a member's home for a potluck luncheon and (used) book exchange.

Dining Out

Dining out is a wonderful way of getting together with friends and enjoying different restaurants in the Houston area.  This group meets the second Saturday evening of every other month, and is open to couples or singles.  A different restaurant is selected each month by the activity chair, but recommendations from members is welcome.  The number of attendees is limited according to the restaurant chosen so that each couple or person can receive a separate check.

Friday Evening Bridge

This activity is intended for people who would like to play bridge in the evening.  This group meets on the third Friday of every month at 7:30 PM at the home of a member.  Bring a partner (male or female), an appetizer and BYOB.  There will be a table for beginners.  All levels are welcome!

Gardening

This group is for members who enjoy gardening, outdoors and wildlife.  Activities will only be on a quarterly basis and will likely entail a luncheon along with an outing to some wonderful local garden.

Golf

You do not have to be a good golfer to join the Golf Group.  We welcome golfers of all levels.  The emphasis is on having fun and not losing too many balls!  Provided you have played a couple of rounds of golf before and know some of the rules and course etiquette, you are most welcome to join us.  The group rotates playing among a few different courses (e.g., Bear Creek and Pine Crest).  Tee off time is usually anywhere from 9 to 10 AM, depending on the chosen course.  After play, we usually stay for a light lunch in the clubhouse, personal choice of course.  The price for golf varies depending on the chosen course.  Rates age generally no more than $34 (seniors less), which includes a cart.

Intermediate Fun Bridge

This group meets on the first and fourth Wednesday of each month.  Also, prior to the monthly luncheon, the players pay a small fee to come early and play beforehand.  The game is usually held at a local hotel restaurant starting at 10 AM.  Food and beverages are avilable at the restaurant's rates.  Play ends around 2:30 or 3 PM.  Occasionally, bridge is held at a member's house and lunch is provided.  This is a very friendly and social group.

Ladies' Day Out

This is a monthly outing to a place of interest.  It usually includes a guided tour and lunch.  The information appears in the monthly newsletter.  Arrangements for the location are made one to three months in advance, depending on the projected difficulty of obtaining a group reservation.

Line / Scottish Dancing

This boot-scootin', high-stepping program is open to all members, whatever their experience.  Our aim is to have fun, learn many dances and maybe burn off a few pounds.  We meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month in the afternoon at the Bear Creek Community Center.

Mah-Jongg

If you can play Gin Rummy, you can play Mah-Jongg.  It's the same concept except it's played with Chinese tiles.  It's a game of skill, strategy, memory and luck all rolled into one.  Once you master the fundamentals, you'll understand why so many people love it!  The number of persons attending and lunch details will be decided by each hostess.

Mix 'n Mingle

This activity is a fun and delicious way to meet new people and visit with friends.  Each meeting has a theme and takes place every month or so, depending on the event or holiday.  The hostess provides the drinks and the members may sign up to bring an array of other foods.  Every Mix 'n Mingle is a unique and delightful exjperience.

Movie Matinee

This group meets once a month for an afternoon movie selected by the activity chair.  Attendees who sign up are notified a few days before the movie by email or phone, informing them of the specific movie and time.  Members meet a few minutes before the show at the selected theater.  Depending upon the movie times available, attendees will be invited to either join other members for lunch at a nearby restaurant before the moive, or afterward go to a nearby shop for coffee and a chat.  Costs are limited to the price of admission and any refreshments purchased.

Out to Lunch Bunch

The Out to Lunch Bunch is a fun group that meets once a month on the first Thursday.  It's a wonderful way to explore new and different restaurants and cuisine in the Houston area.  Each month the activity chair determines the date, time and place.  It's a small group, so it's easier for new members to meet others.  Each attendee pays for her own selection.  Everyone is welcome!

Play Reading

These ladies get together for Play Reading on the third Friday of the month from 10 AM until 12 noon, where they read a variety of comedies and dramas by taking roles.  Each role is chosen at random so that everyone has a chance to be a "star."  It's such fun to have the chance to go "outside" yourself, and if you'll pardon the expression - "ham it up!"

Sew What

Sew What is an informal group which meets on the second Monday of the month in the afternoon.  Learn how to quilt, knit or crochet.

The Written Word

This group meets once a month to have fun.  These ladies learn something about the publishing world and then put their imaginations to work with a suggestive prompt for 10 to 15 minutes.  Each writer reads the results aloud (no one looks for misspelled words).  At the end of the day one person takes an ongoing story with the directions to add a page of their own for the next meeting.  It is a laid-back group, with no thoughts of being published -- at least not at this time!

Wine Tasting

Wine Tasting is a great excuse for couples or singles to party on a Saturday evening at a member's home.  The host and hostess provide the venue, and most importantly select five wines for the evening's consumption.  Each couple brings a hearty appetizer to share.  No dinner is required beforehand as the food is delicious and plentiful.  The hosts provide desserts and coffee, while the guests provide scintillating chat and laughter.  The hosts are reimbursed for the cost of the wine and are provided with guidance instructions for the evening.  It is a relaxing way to make new friends, all at a nominal price of $14 per person.

Winter Walking

This group will meet on the first and third Monday of the month at 10 AM at a predetermined parking spot.  We will arrange for car pooling for those who want it.  Our Winter Walking season begins on the first Monday in October, ending with the final walk at the end of May.  The first walk will be approximately two miles and classified as very easy, progressing to longer and more moderate walks during the year.  To make walking more interesting, we will go to a different park every time.  Some of the parks we plan to go to have picnic facilities and washrooms, so walkers can decide if they want to bring lunch to eat after the walk.  Drinking water, bug spray and proper attire is recommended.  Most parks have no entrance fee, but there will be a few trips to Brazos Bend State Park which has a $4 entrance fee per person.
